On the Road to Rhyolite

Death Valley.

Death Valley was our primary destination, but our first objective was to visit the ghost town of Rhyolite, Nevada.

The photos here were taken along NV 160 and US 95 between Pahrump and Beatty.

The expanse of the desert is everpresent, but interspersed with the panoramic views are notes of humor

and signs of life that highlight a sense of isolation in this expanse moreso than if they were not present at all.

We were also taken by the scenery.

What at first may seem to be a fairly neutral, if not uninteresting, tableau,

upon closer inspection contains shades and tones along with lighter areas and shadows that present a subtle beauty.

Maybe finding beauty in these monochromatic mountains was preparing us for a similar experience in the ghost town.
